Five Important Questions To Ask Caterers Before Hiring Them

Posted By Deanna Rey, Friday, March 13, 2015

1.     Does the caterer specialize in any type of food?

This is good to know so that you, the client, and the caterer have an understanding of the caterers’ strengths within their business. You will be able to determine which caterer has the expertise to prepare the meal you need to connect to your event. You need to know if your caterer can comply with important food allergies or rituals. Be professional and polite when inquiring about any specializations in food or food preparation. This step will give you a quick idea of whether or not this caterer is right for your event.

2.     What is the Caterer’s average price range?

Questioning pricing is imperative when deciding to book a caterer. As a client who is planning an event, you need to know how much money you can allot to the caterer. Discuss with the caterer if the costs are itemized by food selection for the event or if the company has a flat rate per number of individuals attending. Again, this is to make sure there are no unexpected expenditures prior to the event.

3.     Will the caterer provide a wait staff, linens, silverware, table salts, tables and chairs?

Make sure you know which vender is providing which product or service at your event. Organization is extremely important to make sure you are not leaving out any details necessary for your event. You need to know what exactly your caterer will provide so you can make the necessary additions to your event. Each catering company is different and it’s essential to find out if they fit all your event needs. Decide whether you want a buffet style food distribution or a wait staff. Then, determine if your caterer can provide warming stations or wait staff for your event.

4.     Does the caterer have a business license?

This is a critical question to ask your potential caterers. Obtaining a business license ensures that your potential catering company has met all the health department standards. You may also want to ask if the caterer has liability insurance for their company.

5.     Can the caterer provide references of past clients and images of the event?

You want to make sure your potential caterer has experience and can meet your expectations for your event. Looking at their past catering event will show you the caterer’s versatility and if they can handle an event like yours. Offering references shows you that they are proud of their past work and that they produce positive outcomes. Get to know the caterer’s work and see if they are the right fit for your event.

Asking questions like these can help you get to know your potential caterer. These questions can aid your decision of which caterer is best fit for your event. Getting to know your caterers and reviewing their past work can help ensure that you will construct a wonderful and unforgettable event!
